Alkaline Lake Nakuru was first mapped by Major
Thomson, as was the nearby smaller lake Elmenteita,
which is privately owned by descendants of Lord
Delamere. During a dry period in 1939/40 Lake
Nakuru completely evaporated, refilling in mid 40’s.
By the end of the 50’s it was dry again, refilling in
the 60’s remaining wet ever since.
